Niger, Kogi, Others to Experience Thunderstorm, Rainfall for Three Days — NiMeT

NiMet Strike: Association Writes ICAO, WMO Over Airlines Flying Without Meteorological Briefing, Reports
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a stretch of thunderstorms and rainfall across various regions of Nigeria from Sunday, June 9 to Tuesday, June 11, 2025.

The agency’s weather outlook, released on Saturday in Abuja, projects wet weather conditions in many parts of the country, including the North, North-Central, and Southern states.

According to NiMet, Sunday is expected to begin with cloudy skies in many areas, but conditions will shift as the day progresses.

The agency stated that “in the afternoon/evening hours, there are prospects of thunderstorms with rains over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, Jigawa, Borno, Gombe and Bauchi.”

The North-Central region is also expected to experience similar weather patterns. A cloudy morning will give way to rain and thunderstorms later in the day, affecting areas such as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau States.

In the southern part of the country, NiMet forecast a relatively calm morning with cloudy skies, followed by rainfall across several states later in the day.

“Rain showers are anticipated over parts of Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Edo, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa States,” the statement noted.

On Monday, the agency expects morning thunderstorms in Sokoto, Zamfara, and Bauchi, with further developments as the day unfolds. Widespread thunderstorm activity is likely to spread through parts of the North-Central region, including the FCT, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Benue.

In the South, early morning rains are forecast for Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States, with potential for continued precipitation in the later hours.

By Tuesday, the weather pattern continues with isolated thunderstorms and moderate rain in parts of Zamfara and Kaduna during the morning. NiMet emphasized the need for public awareness and safety as the unsettled weather persists.

In a public advisory, NiMet urged Nigerians to take preventive measures against the expected weather conditions. “Disconnect electrical appliances from electrical sockets. Stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees,” the agency warned. It further advised motorists to avoid driving during heavy downpours and to secure loose outdoor items that may be displaced by strong winds.

NiMet also reminded airline operators to consult airport-specific weather forecasts to aid in planning flight operations and avoid disruptions. “Airline operators are advised to obtain updated weather reports from NiMet for effective planning,” the agency stated.

The agency, established under the 2003 Act, plays a key role in collecting and analyzing atmospheric data, issuing forecasts, and providing early warnings crucial to sectors such as agriculture, aviation, disaster response, and public safety. NiMet continues to deploy a range of modern tools—including satellite imagery, automated weather stations, and Doppler radar systems—across Nigeria to monitor weather systems and issue timely advisories.
