Ahead of the 2027 elections, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) faced a major setback as its 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Engr. Yusuf Buhari, and Kano State governorship candidate, Bala Mohammed Gwagwarawa, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
They were joined by the Kano State Working Committee, 38 local government chairmen, secretaries, 13 House of Assembly candidates, and six House of Representatives candidates.
The defection, facilitated by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, was seen as a blow to SDP’s 2027 ambitions. Jibrin stated that the move signaled the failure of SDP to challenge APC, emphasizing that more defections were expected. APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje welcomed the defectors, describing their shift as a transition “from darkness to light” and praising President Bola Tinubu’s reforms.
Yusuf Buhari and Gwagwarawa cited Tinubu’s economic policies and improving security as reasons for their defection, expressing confidence in APC’s leadership. Former Kano governor Kabiru Gaya declared SDP “dead,” celebrating the influx of its members into APC.
