Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has declared his party remains the only credible opposition platform capable of challenging Nigeria’s political establishment in the 2027 elections.
Baba-Ahmed made these remarks during Labour Party’s recent emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting convened in Abuja, where he alleged the party was deprived of approximately four million votes in the 2023 presidential election
He said: “I want to draw our attention to something politically important happening in the country. Labour Party scored 10 million votes, though this was later reduced to 6.1 million.
“Now that people are searching for another platform, they should be talking about Labour Party – not another party like SDP that didn’t even get 100,000 votes.”
The former senator made a forceful case for Labour Party’s supremacy among opposition groups: “We should own this advantage and use it. Labour Party is the party to be in. Why bring in a party that has no governor, no senator, and less than a million votes? If you ask – is there something about Labour Party they’re afraid of? Yes! Is there something in Labour Party they don’t want Nigerians to enjoy? Yes! Will Labour Party bring positive change? Yes! And they want to avoid this.”
Baba-Ahmed concluded with a direct message to party members: “Now that we’re back on course, hold this argument firmly. We have the votes everyone is looking for in other platforms. Don’t let this opportunity slip away.”
Labour Party has been in the news recently over leadership tussle that has seen the party polarised into three factions with three different factional national chairmen, after a recent Supreme Court ruling.
