Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has strongly condemned the killing and burning of suspected kidnappers by a mob in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area. He described the act as barbaric and unacceptable.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice. He stressed that mob killings have no place in Edo State and would not be tolerated.
Representing the governor on a fact-finding visit, Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the Government House, SP Solomon Osaghale, assured residents of a full investigation. He revealed that the victims had boarded a commercial truck, which was stopped by local security. A search reportedly uncovered firearms, leading to the mob attack.
While condemning the killings, Osaghale emphasized that no one has the right to take another person’s life. He assured that those responsible would be held accountable.
“His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, is deeply concerned about this incident,” Osaghale stated. “He has directed the Commissioner of Police to launch a full-scale investigation. Already, over four suspects have been arrested.”
The CSO urged calm, assuring residents—especially the Hausa community—of their safety. Security agencies have been deployed to restore order.
Leader of the Hausa Community in Uromi, Mallam Aliyu Haruna, thanked Governor Okpebholo for his swift intervention. He noted that the presence of security forces had eased tension.
“This is the first time such an incident is happening in Uromi,” Haruna said. “For over 70 years, we have lived peacefully here, and we remain grateful to the people of Uromi.”
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace, security, and justice for all residents of Edo State.
