Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 for workers in the state.
He made the announcement on Wednesday, May 1, 2025, during the International Workers’ Day celebration held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
“Today, I am proud to announce that our administration has approved a new minimum wage of seventy-five thousand naira (₦75,000) per month. It’s our way of saying thank you,” the governor declared to a cheering crowd of workers.
He added, “We believe this will make a real difference for Edo workers. In return, we count on your renewed dedication as we work together to build a better Edo.”
The previous minimum wage in the state was ₦70,000. The increase, according to the governor, is aimed at cushioning the impact of the rising cost of living and prevailing economic challenges faced by workers.
In another major announcement at the event, Governor Okpebholo disclosed the formal absorption of EdoSTAR teachers into the Edo State civil service — a move widely applauded by the education sector.
The May Day celebration in Edo was marked by colourful parades and solidarity songs, drawing enthusiastic participation from workers despite a national directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters urging a boycott of the event in the state.
