Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has said that his administration is committed to transparency, accountability, and improved welfare of workers with the establishment of a dedicated whistle-blower office in the state.
Speaking in Asaba on Thursday during the 2025 May Day celebration, Governor Oborevwori, represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, described workers as the engine room of governance and reiterated that empowering them includes creating safe avenues for civic engagement.
“This year’s theme, ‘Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship’, could not have come at a better time,” he said. “We must create systems that protect the rights of workers to speak out and be heard, especially when exposing wrongdoing.”
He continued, “That is why my administration has launched a dedicated whistle-blower policy and office, complete with a secure phone line. This office is not symbolic—it is active, functional and ready to receive credible reports from any worker or citizen.”
Governor Oborevwori added that the policy was designed to encourage openness in the use of public funds and eliminate impunity across all levels of government. “We are saying clearly—no worker will be victimised for doing the right thing,” he assured.
He noted that despite prevailing economic challenges, his government has prioritised the well-being of workers under the M.O.R.E. Agenda, with improvements in salaries, pensions, healthcare, and workplace conditions.
“You, our civil servants, health professionals, educators, artisans, and private sector employees, are the lifeblood of our state. We honour your sacrifices,” he said.
“On this Workers’ Day, we reaffirm our commitment to building a Delta where every worker is respected, where courage is rewarded, and where honesty is not punished but protected,” he added.
Also addressing the event, NLC State Chairman, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, and TUC Chairman, Comrade Martins Bolum, urged workers to remain united in reclaiming their civic space amid growing economic pressures.
The May Day event featured solidarity speeches and a colourful match-past by various labour unions.
