The Bayelsa State Government has declared a decisive crackdown on pipeline vandals following the brazen attack on critical energy infrastructure in the state.
The Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Hon. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, expressed the government’s outrage at the destruction of the strategic 24-inch Ogboinbiri/Obiobi gas pipeline in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
She described the act as deliberate act of economic terrorism against the collective prosperity of the people of the state that would be met with the full force of the law.
She revealed that security operatives have launched a major manhunt for the perpetrators, with multiple investigations underway.
“The government is working with security agencies to identify and apprehend those behind this incident. We are also taking steps to prevent such occurrences in the future”, she said.
She stressed that protecting national infrastructure is a collective responsibility. “We call on citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity around public assets to law enforcement,” Koku-Obiyai said.
The Commissioner stressed that the destruction of critical public infrastructure carries devastating consequences, depleting vital government revenues, creating environmental hazards, and putting citizens’ health at serious risk. “Exposure to natural gas and petrochemicals poses serious health risks,” she warned.
She also appealed to Bayelsa youth to avoid destructive acts. “Instead of sabotage, let’s work together to promote peace and protect our infrastructure. This is key to achieving the prosperity agenda and attracting investment to the state.”
The government urged continued cooperation from the public to safeguard critical assets and ensure long-term development.
