Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar (Peoples Democratic Party), Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai (Social Democratic Party) are said to have finalised months of negotiations to form an alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election, reports have it.
Dr. Tanku Yunusa, National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement, stated in a telephone interview with Spear News that it has long been clear that those seeking a better Nigeria must set aside personal interests to challenge the status quo.
“This matter was settled long ago—what more is there to say? Anyone who truly cares about Nigeria knows that unity is the only way forward,” he said.
An earlier report has it that sources who requested anonymity as the decision remains unofficial, confirmed the agreement was reached on Tuesday.
The ADC, a lesser-known party whose 2023 presidential candidate secured just 82,000 votes, will serve as the coalition’s platform.
A key unresolved issue is the selection of a presidential flagbearer. Nigeria’s informal power rotation between its northern and southern regions complicates Abubakar’s prospects, given his northern roots. His 2023 bid—his sixth—was weakened by southern voters favoring Obi, who hails from the region.
Obi has recently rejected any alliance where he plays a supporting role to Atiku, as in 2019. Reversing that stance could risk alienating his youth-driven support base.
