A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Prince Kassim Afegbua, has asserted that the party’s defeat in the recent Edo State gubernatorial election was inevitable due to deep-seated divisions within its ranks.
Speaking in an interview, Afegbua claimed the PDP was already fractured before the polls, making victory unattainable regardless of the candidate.
Afegbua, a former Edo State Commissioner for Information, argued that the party’s internal crises, including unresolved leadership tussles and a lack of cohesive strategy, undermined its chances against the All Progressives Congress (APC). He emphasised that the PDP’s inability to present a united front allowed the ruling party to capitalise on its disarray.
The PDP’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, lost to APC’s Senator Monday Okpebholo in the September 2024 election, a result that analysts attributed to both the PDP’s internal wrangling and the APC’s strengthened grassroots mobilisation.
Afegbua’s comments align with broader criticisms of the PDP’s national leadership, which has faced accusations of poor conflict resolution and declining influence in recent electoral cycles.
