The Edo State Government has waded into a dispute over the ownership of 9 oil wells and a gas field in Orogho community, Orhionwon Local government area of the State.
The action follows a petition by the community, alleging that Seplat Petroleum Development Company unfairly ceded their resources to aa neighboring State.
In response to the petition, Governor Monday Okpebholo dispatched a delegation led by Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa to visit the community on Friday.
“We are here on the directive of His Excellency to see things for ourselves,” Idahosa said during the visit. “The government is committed to ensuring that what rightfully belongs to Edo people is not taken away.”
The team included the Special Adviser to the Governor on Oil and Gas, Felix Osemwengie Isere, who signed the official statement released to the press.
“Our mission is simple—engage the community, inspect the sites, and gather facts,” Isere stated. “Governor Okpebholo will not fold his arms while Edo’s resources are being mismanaged or diverted.”
The inspection tour covered the 9 oil wells and the gas field in Orogho. Representatives of Seplat Petroleum were present, led by the company’s Government Relations Manager.
Community leaders expressed their frustration. “We have been watching this happen for years,” said one community elder. “This visit gives us hope that justice may finally come.”
Governor Okpebholo, in the statement, reiterated his resolve: “We will protect the rights of Edo communities and ensure all oil and gas assets are properly accounted for.”
The government also commended the Orogho people for raising the alarm. “Your vigilance is commendable,” Isere said. “We will pursue this matter with fairness, diligence, and full respect for the rule of law.”
