The Senate, following in the footsteps of the House of Representatives, has approved President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
This decision was made under the constitutional powers granted by the amended 1999 Constitution. The approval allows President Tinubu to implement emergency measures while requiring a review of the situation within six months.
In line with the Constitution, the National Assembly has also established a joint committee comprising members from both chambers to oversee the administration of affairs in Rivers State during the emergency period.
Additionally, the Senate has resolved to set up a mediation committee consisting of prominent Nigerians to help address and resolve the ongoing political crisis in the state.
This move aims to stabilise the situation in Rivers State, though it remains to be seen how effective these measures will be in restoring order and addressing the root causes of the crisis.
