The Labour Party (LP) has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible primary elections ahead of the Anambra State gubernatorial race.
The party’s National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, made the pledge during a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) held on Thursday in Abuja.
Barrister Abure stressed that Nigeria’s progress hinges on the establishment of a transparent and honest leadership recruitment process. He dismissed rumors suggesting that the Labour Party is aligned with or working for another political party, asserting that the LP has grown into one of Nigeria’s largest and most independent political platforms.
“I want to reassure our members in Anambra State that, as is customary with our party, our primaries and congresses will be free, fair, and credible,” Abure stated. “Our ideology and philosophy are rooted in doing things differently because you cannot achieve different results by repeating the same approach. For us in the Labour Party, internal democracy, competition, and a level playing field are non-negotiable.”
He further explained that the absence of godfatherism and a skewed process would allow the best candidates to emerge.
“When the best emerge from political parties, we will have the best hands to handle the affairs of the country. Unfortunately, Nigeria has yet to see its best leaders, which is why we face governance challenges today. The Labour Party is determined to change this trajectory,” Abure added.
Addressing allegations of collusion with another party, the National Chairman categorically denied the claims, stating, “The Labour Party is independent of any other political party. We have built a distinct party with a unique ideology, program, and philosophy. It would be counterproductive to subsume this under the whims of another party.”
On the ongoing party registration and revalidation exercise, the NWC expressed satisfaction with the overwhelming success recorded so far. However, the committee approved an extension of the deadline to May 2025 to accommodate more members. Additionally, congresses across wards, local governments, and states are now scheduled to hold between June and July 2025.
