The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dismissed recent claims by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is responsible for the internal crises within opposition parties, describing the allegations as baseless and reprehensible.
The party’s response follows el-Rufai’s assertion that the APC has orchestrated and exacerbated the ongoing crisis within the NNPP, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Labour Party.
According to the former governor, the ruling party has deliberately instigated these disputes to destabilize opposition leadership and consolidate its political dominance.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that el-Rufai made these claims in a widely circulated video on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday. In the video, he accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of actively sponsoring discord within opposition ranks to undermine their cohesion and effectiveness.
The NNPP, however, has firmly rejected these allegations, labeling them as unfounded and politically motivated. The party emphasized that its internal challenges are being addressed through legitimate mechanisms and are unrelated to external interference.
In a statement in Lagos on Wednesday, the NNPP’s National Chairman, Dr Agbo Major, said the party was compelled to respond to el’Rufai because his utterances linking the NNPP challenges to the APC were misguided.
“El’Rufai’s assertions were inaccurate information he may have gathered from enemies of the NNPP’s internal democratic processes.”
Major pointed out that the crisis in NNPP, which had been resolved, was a result of the inordinate ambition of some members in total disregard for agreements and party rules and regulations.
“The genesis of the crisis in the NNPP erupted shortly after the 2023 general elections as a result of the termination of a Memorandum of Understanding that struck a temporary union between the NNPP, the National Movement (TNM), and the Kwankwassiya Movement.
“The genesis and progress of the disagreement have been vigorously put there in the open, using all media platforms since 2023.
“If the ordinary and uneducated Nigerians are familiar with the facts about the raging crisis, then it’s disappointing for El’rufai to come to the open media to make such an unguarded and unacceptable statement.
“Nigerians are no longer to be deceived. El’rufai must know that the choice of who rules Nigeria come 2027 can never be determined by him.”
The national chairman urged El’rufai to stay away from NNPP issues, as the party is not in opposition to any other, including the APC
