Mikel Arteta has hailed Arsenal’s stunning 7-1 Champions League thrashing of PSV Eindhoven as a “huge lift” for the squad but has urged caution ahead of Sunday’s Premier League showdown with struggling Manchester United.
The Gunners, sitting second in the table but 13 points adrift of leaders Liverpool, are realistically out of the title race after recent slip-ups. However, they head to Old Trafford aiming for a fifth consecutive league win over their historic rivals, with the match marking Arteta’s 200th Premier League game in charge.
Despite Arsenal’s injury woes in attack and a recent goal drought in the league, their midweek European masterclass has reignited confidence. “It was a great night for us in an important competition that we have hope in,” Arteta said. “The manner of the performance lifted everybody. But that’s the past – it’s about preparing for Sunday and replicating that level.”
United, languishing in 14th place and 21 points behind Arsenal, have endured a turbulent season. Yet Arteta insists they remain a threat, pointing to their ability to spring surprises, including a win over Manchester City, a draw against Liverpool, and an FA Cup penalty shootout victory over the Gunners earlier this season.
“That’s the history of that football club,” Arteta said. “They have top players and a top coach. Watching their draw against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, it’s clear they can produce a strong performance and beat anyone on their day. We know the challenge and have prepared accordingly.”
Reflecting on his 200-game milestone, Arteta named his appointment as Arsenal boss in December 2019 as his proudest moment. “Sitting here on my first day, fulfilling my dream of managing this incredible club, was number one,” he said. “But the other night against PSV was up there with the best moments because of how we performed.”
With his hunger for success undimmed, Arteta added: “I still have a lot of energy and I’m driven to achieve more.” Arsenal will need that drive as they aim to continue their dominance over United and keep their faint title hopes alive.
