A coalition of labour unions, student groups, and political activists under the South-North Progressive Forum (SNP-FORUM) has declared a nationwide campaign to stop former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from contesting the 2027 presidential election, insisting that the presidency must rotate to Southern Nigeria.
At a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the group, backed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), argued that power must shift to the South to correct a “historic imbalance” in leadership since 1999.
Comrade Onyekwulisi F.B.I, SNP-FORUM’s National Convener, stated: “Nigeria’s unity hinges on fairness. Since 1957, the North has held power for 24 years, the South just 18. We demand a constitutional framework to enforce rotation, starting with a Southern president in 2027.”
The group proposed two key demands:
- A constitutional amendment mandating power rotation between North and South.
- An electoral reform bill requiring political parties to zone presidential tickets.
We’ll Mobilise 10 Million Voters
SNP-FORUM vowed to rally a minimum of 10 million Nigerians, with 80% support from Northern voters, to enforce transparent elections in 2027. “This isn’t partisan—it’s a national imperative,” said Comrade Eragbe Anslem, the forum’s spokesperson.
