JUST IN: Kano NNPP senator Confirms Defection to APC, Received by Senate Caucus

The All Progressives Congress (APC) camp at the Senate gained one more member on Wednesday following the confirmation of the defection of Sen. Sulaiman Kawu Sumaila into the fold.

The Kano-South senator defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the APC.

His letter of defection was formally read to senators during plenary in Abuja today.

The addition of Sen. Sumaila shored up the number of APC senators to 65, further strengthening the majority control of the ruling party.

There are now 33 PDP senators; 5 Labour Party senators; 2 NNPP; 2 SDP; and 1 APGA.

Sumaila, a former aide to former President Muhammadu Buhari, was received amid jubilation by members of the APC caucus.

His entry into the fold is said to be part of the scheming by the APC to take back Kano in 2027.

Kano is the home state of the National Chairman of the APC, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, though the governor, Abba Yusuf, is a member of the NNPP.

Speaking on his defection, Sumaila said it would offer him the opportunity to better serve the interests of his people.
