A federal high court in Abuja has granted permission to the federal government to conceal the identities of witnesses in the Nnamdi Kanu trial.
Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021 over alleged terrorism and treasonable felony.
On Tuesday, Adegboyega Awomolo, prosecution counsel, told the court that he filed an ex parte application dated April 10 seeking to protect the identities of the witnesses.
He prayed that the court should provide screens and masks to conceal their identities.
“The essence is for the safety and security of officers of the state who would be part of the witnesses,” he said.
Kanu Agabi, counsel to the defendant, did not oppose the application.
The trial has commenced and the first witness, a DSS operative, has been called.
Kanu was re-arraigned on March 21 before James Omotosho, judge of a federal high court in Abuja.
