A total of 3,400 athletes, 560 coaches, and 418 officials are participating in the inaugural Niger Delta Sports Festival kicking off tomorrow in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on April 2, 2025. They will be aiming for medals in 17 sporting categories.
Already the State Governor Pastor Umo Eno, on behalf of the state government and its people, has extended a warm welcome to all athletes, officials, and fans attending the event.
He commended the sponsors for their support in making the festival a reality. He emphasized that, “The event would enhance sports tourism, strengthen regional ties, and provide a platform for discovering future champions who could represent Nigeria at national and international levels”.
He also encouraged residents to attend the events and participate in the celebration of sportsmanship and excellence adding that the state, known as the Land of Promise, is set to showcase its renowned hospitality and tourism appeal during the festival.
The opening ceremony of the week-long festival sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and others aims to celebrate athletic excellence, foster regional unity, and promote sportsmanship across the Niger Delta region. It will take place at Uyo Township Stadium at 4:00 PM.
Key venues for the event include the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo Township Stadium, Nwaniba Marina, Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre, Ultra Fit Sports Centre, West Itam Secondary School, and Cornelia Connelly College.
