The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has officially commenced regulatory oversight of the gaming industry within Abuja, aiming to enhance revenue generation and create a struRegulatectured, investor-friendly environment for operators.
The Director General of the FCT Lottery Regulatory Office, Mr. Lanre Gbajabiamila, made the announcement during a joint press briefing with the Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) in Abuja.
Gbajabiamila said the move followed a directive from the Honourable Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, who ordered the full implementation of regulatory control after the Supreme Court’s ruling in AG Lagos & Ors Vs AG Federation & Anor SC/1/2008.
The ruling affirmed that the FCTA holds jurisdictional authority over lottery and gaming activities within the capital territory.
He assured stakeholders that the transition would be smooth, emphasizing that all licenses previously issued by the defunct National Lottery Regulatory Commission remain valid and enforceable until expiration.
“This is a critical opportunity to bring structure to the industry, enhance transparency, and maximize its economic potential,” Gbajabiamila stated. “We are committed to engaging with operators throughout this transition to ensure clarity, compliance, and stability.”
He stressed that the initiative is not just about regulation but about creating an ecosystem that encourages fair play, responsible gaming, and long-term development.
Also speaking at the event, Acting Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, Mr. Michael Ango, noted that the gaming sector can play a significant role in transforming Abuja into a vibrant investment and tourism hub.
“Abuja is increasingly becoming a tourist destination. Leisure activities like gaming can help drive economic activity, and this regulation provides a path for sustainable growth,” Ango said.
He pledged the support of FCT-IRS in collaborating with the new regulatory office to ensure effective tax compliance and operational efficiency in the gaming sector.
Both agencies thanked the FCT Minister for his leadership and reiterated their commitment to building a transparent and productive regulatory framework that benefits all stakeholders and residents of the FCT.
