Prominent members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State have urged the party leadership to take disciplinary action against Olufunke Rekiya, the chairperson of Onigbongbo LCDA Chairman, following what they described as derogatory remarks about the party’s primary election process.
Comrade Monsuru Area, a respected party stalwart, expressed deep concern over Barrister Hassan’s public criticism of the primary election. Speaking with journalists on Saturday, he emphasised that such comments from a senior party official could erode members’ confidence in the APC’s internal democracy.
“There are established channels for addressing grievances within our party structure,” Comrade Area stated. “When a council chairman chooses to disparage a legitimate party process on social media rather than using proper avenues, it sets a dangerous precedent that cannot be ignored.”
He further noted that the APC’s credibility depends on members respecting its decision-making processes, even when disagreements arise. “Discipline is the bedrock of our party’s strength,” he added. “If we allow such conduct to go unchecked, we risk creating an environment where party decisions are constantly undermined.”
Similarly, Honourable Jeremiah Olaseni, another party member, echoed these concerns while stressing the need for swift action. He described Hassan’s comments as “unfortunate” and “potentially damaging” to the party’s reputation.
“As party members, we all have the right to disagree, but we must express our concerns through the appropriate mechanisms,” Honourable Olaseni said. “Publicly condemning an ongoing process without substantive evidence is unacceptable, especially from someone holding public office under our party’s banner.”
He stressed that the APC’s leadership must address the matter decisively to maintain order and discipline. “This isn’t about silencing dissent,” he explained. “It’s about ensuring that criticisms are constructive and channeled properly to avoid unnecessary damage to the party’s image.”
The calls for discipline follow Barrister Hassan’s Facebook post, where she described the selection of Moyosore Adebanjo as the APC chairmanship candidate for Onigbongbo LCDA as a “kangaroo process” and a “dance of shame.” She alleged irregularities in the primary election, claims that party officials have dismissed as unfounded.
