In compliance with a directive from the Edo State Government, the Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Area, Solomon Oghuma, has instructed the Okpella Traditional Council and kingmakers to proceed with the election of a new Okuokpellagbe of Okpella.
The selection process has been scheduled for Saturday, 10th May 2025, following the recent dethronement of the previous occupant, Lukeman Akemokue.

The exercise will be conducted in accordance with the Chiefs Edict of 1979, which governs traditional succession in the state, according to a letter dated 7th May 2025, which was addressed to the most senior Daudu (Chief) in Okpella, containing a confirmation and authorisation of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Benin City.
According to the directive, the kingmakers are expected to convene on Saturday, 10th May 2025, at the Imiokhewa Village Town Hall in Ogute-Oke, the ruling branch of Okpella Clan, to elect a new traditional ruler in accordance with existing laws.
The government assured members of the community of sending official representatives to oversee the proceedings to ensure transparency and adherence to due process.
The letter emphasised that this directive supersedes any previous instructions and called for full compliance from all parties involved.
The Iddo Sub Ruling Area in Oteku Ruling House had met on Wednesday at the residence of the most Senior Village Head, Chief Acheku and agreed to concede to Okhomunyio since late Oba Obinogbe is from the Iddo Ruling Area.
All Qualified Male Adults who are interested in the Throne should submit names for the position and be ready for election on Saturday.
The Oteku Ruling House will be meeting at the residence of Chief Ayuba Acheku today by 3pm.
In a related development, the Okpella Traditional Council summoned an emergency meeting for 10am on Thursday to set out traditional modalities for the process.
