Workers in Edo State have defied a directive from the National Secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to boycott the event, as they thronged the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City for a colourful and well-attended Workers’ Day ceremony.
Led by the Edo State NLC Chairman, Comrade Bernard Joman Egwakhide, the workers turned out in their numbers, showcasing unity and solidarity despite the national body’s order to stay away from May Day activities in the state.
The highlight of the celebration was a major announcement by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who disclosed the state government’s approval for the immediate absorption of EdoSTAR teachers into the civil service.
“Today, I am pleased to announce that all EdoSTAR teachers will be formally absorbed into the Edo State civil service,” Governor Okpebholo declared, drawing thunderous applause from the crowd. He made the announcement during his address at the International Workers’ Day event, held on Wednesday, May 1, 2025.
