….New digital system aims to curb crime, end harassment of motorists
Abuja- The Nigeria Police Force has announced a 30-day grace period for motorists to obtain digital permits for factory-fitted tinted vehicle windows, with enforcement set to begin on 1st June 2025.
The reintroduction of the Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) system follows public outcry over frequent harassment of drivers by security operatives.
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Spokesperson, in a statement on Wednesday, emphasised that the initiative aligns with the NPF’s tech-driven policing reforms.
“This balances public safety with citizen convenience, fostering trust in our security architecture,” he stated
The fully digital application process, accessible via possap.gov.ng, integrates National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN) verification with biometric checks to ensure transparency.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun stated that the measure addresses security concerns while accommodating legitimate users.
“Tinted vehicles have been weaponised by criminals for kidnappings, armed robberies and ‘one-chance’ schemes. This system helps distinguish between lawful owners and potential threats,” he noted.
Key Features of the New System:
- Online processing with 72-hour turnaround
- QR-coded digital permits for easy verification
- Mandatory NIN/TIN linkage to prevent fraud
- Special provisions for medical cases and security personnel
The police warned that officers found extorting motorists during enforcement would face severe sanctions. Motorists are advised to complete registrations before the 31st May deadline to avoid penalties.
Note:Application portal opens 1st May 2025. Vehicle owners with existing permits must revalidate them digitally.
