The University of Ibadan has issued a stern health advisory warning female students against the dangerous trend of commercial egg donation, revealing disturbing health consequences associated with the practice.
In an internal memorandum from the University Health Service dated 15th April 2025 and seen by SPEAR NEWS, the institution expressed deep concern over increasing cases of students being recruited as egg donors for In-Vitro Fertilization by private agencies.

While acknowledging egg donation’s role in helping infertile couples, the university emphasised it should never be treated as an income source or side hustle. The medical memo detailed alarming health risks, including immediate complications like abdominal pain, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, infections and potential organ damage. More worryingly, it highlighted possible long-term effects such as infertility, noting that critical medical questions remain unanswered about safe donation frequency and intervals.
The institution recommended strict limits of no more than three donations yearly and urged students to only use reputable clinics that prioritize donor safety.
SPEAR NEWS investigations reveal the advisory follows growing reports of female students donating eggs for payments ranging from N150,000 to N300,000 per cycle, with many allegedly unaware of the potential consequences.
University authorities declined further comments when contacted, but multiple sources confirmed financial pressures are driving the trend.
