The Presidency has issued a stern warning against the illegal mounting of 2027 campaign billboards across major cities in Nigeria, describing the act as a breach of electoral laws.
In a statement released on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Federal Government expressed displeasure over the appearance of campaign materials promoting President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for the 2027 elections.
The statement noted that such billboards—spotted in Abuja, Kano, and other locations—feature images of the President, his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Vice President, despite the absence of an approved campaign timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The Presidency emphasised that the Electoral Act strictly prohibits any form of political campaigning before INEC officially lifts the ban. It warned that premature campaigns could distort the electoral process and create undue advantages.
“President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima are law-abiding leaders who do not support actions that undermine Nigeria’s institutions or electoral integrity,” the statement read.
The Presidency clarified that the President and his deputy remain fully committed to delivering on their governance agenda, including economic recovery, infrastructure development, and national security.
“When INEC releases the timetable for the 2027 elections, the President will formally communicate his intentions to Nigerians—not through unauthorized billboards,” the statement added.
The Federal Government directed individuals and groups funding the illegal billboards to dismantle them immediately or face legal consequences.
“No one has been authorized to campaign for the President ahead of INEC’s guidelines. All such materials must be removed without delay,” the statement warned.
The Presidency urged the public to disregard the billboards, reaffirming that governance, not early politicking, remains the priority of the Tinubu administration.
