Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the long-awaited payment of gratuities owed to retired civil servants since 2012, signaling an end to over a decade of financial hardship for the state’s pensioners.
The State Government has begun disbursing the first N1 billion to clear the arrears, fulfilling a promise to address the backlog inherited from previous administrations.
In a statement signed by
Owaen Fred Itua,
his Chief Press Secretary, the Governor assured that his administration is committed to restoring the dignity of retirees by ensuring they receive their due entitlements without further delay.
“For over a decade, many of our retirees have suffered due to non-payment of their gratuities. This administration is putting an end to that hardship,” he stated.
The Governor emphasized that the payment process would be transparent, with funds disbursed in phases following a structured verification process. He reiterated that measures would be put in place to prevent future delays.
Pensioners have expressed their relief and gratitude. Mr. Patrick Edobor, a retired principal, described the payment as a “lifeline” that had been long-awaited. “Many of our colleagues passed away while hoping for their gratuities,” he said.
This payment, the first batch of many, marks a significant step in improving workers’ welfare and demonstrates Governor Okpebholo’s dedication to clearing the state’s inherited financial obligations.
