The All Progressives Congress (APC) has chosen Hon Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC–Esan West) as the new Majority Leader, Edo State Assembly.
The selection follows the party’s formal assumption of its new status as the majority party in the Assembly.
Recall that the APC had last month, notified the Assembly of its majority standing, promising leadership changes in due course.
The party now controls 13 seats, following the defection of four lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), leaving the PDP with 11 seats.
At the plenary session in Benin City, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, read a letter from the APC leadership nominating the new set of principal officers.
According to the letter, Aigbokhan takes over as Majority Leader, while Addeh Isibor becomes Deputy Majority Leader, and Mustapha Lecky assumes the role of Chief Whip.
The position of Deputy Chief Whip, previously assigned to Richard Edosa (APC–Oredo West), was rescinded, as the House does not recognise the office. Edosa, who was formerly the only LP lawmaker, had recently defected to the APC.
Meanwhile despite the APC’s majority, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions remain with the minority PDP.
Speaker Agbebaku, while announcing the changes, mentioned that the PDP would soon forward its list of principal officers.
He also urged members to prioritise unity and the interests of Edo people over party affiliations.
“What matters is that we all work together to ensure the success of Governor Monday Okpebholo,” Agbebaku stated.
