Oba Abimbola Owoade has been officially installed as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, succeeding the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III who passed away on 22nd April 2022 after a remarkable 52-year reign.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde presided over the historic event, presenting the new monarch with the staff and instruments of office earlier in the day at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
The coronation attracted a host of dignitaries including Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, Statistician-General of the Federation; Mrs Tamunominini Makinde, the governor’s wife; Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal; and Osun State’s Deputy Governor Prince Kola Adewusi.
The Ondo State government was represented by Chief of Staff Prince Olusegun Omojuwa, while President Bola Tinubu sent Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu as his representative. Other notable attendees included Oyo State House of Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin and Senator Monsurat Sunmonu.
The ascension of Oba Owoade marks a new chapter for the ancient Oyo Kingdom, nearly three years after the passing of the revered Oba Adeyemi III at age 83. The ceremony reaffirmed the enduring significance of the Alaafin throne in Yoruba culture and tradition, with the new monarch now assuming leadership of one of Nigeria’s most prestigious traditional institutions.
