The Department of State Security Services (DSS) has arrested the suspended State Corps Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin.
Authoritative sources say he is being questioned over the activities of security personnel under his coordination in the lynching of travelers on March 27 in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area.
“The DSS is interrogating him to determine his level of involvement or negligence in the matter,” the source said.
Meanwhile, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reached out to victims’ families and leaders of the Hausa community in the state. He has also contacted northern governors over the incident.
In addition, the governor has engaged with the Kano State Government, where most of the deceased reportedly hailed from. He also traveled to Katsina State to meet with Governor Dikko Radda on the issue.
Governor Okpebholo had earlier suspended CP Ibadin and vowed to bring all perpetrators to justice. “No one is above the law. We will ensure those responsible for this crime face the full consequences,” he stated.
Reports indicate that Ibadin, a native of Uromi, may have had prior knowledge of illegal vigilante groups operating in the area. However, he allegedly failed to take action against them. This has fueled suspicions that he either turned a blind eye or actively enabled their operations.
The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding law and order. A government official, speaking anonymously, said, “We will not allow impunity. Anyone involved in these killings will face justice.”
The arrest marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to restore security and hold accountable those complicit in the attack. Observers see it as a strong message from Governor Okpebholo’s administration that lawlessness will not be tolerated.
