The House of Representatives passed a key constitutional amendment bill for the creation of Orlu State on Wednesday, bringing the South-East closer to its potential sixth state.
Sponsored by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere (Ideato North/South, Imo) and 33 co-sponsors, the bill seeks to alter the 1999 Constitution by carving out Orlu State from parts of Imo, Abia, and Anambra, with Orlu as its capital.
The proposed state will comprise 28 local government areas, including Orlu, Orsu, Ideato North/South, Oguta, Ihiala, and others listed in the draft amendment. Following a voice vote presided over by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the bill secured majority support and passed its second reading.
