A bill seeking to establish the Court of Appeal as the final authority for resolving governorship election disputes has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
Sponsored by Nnamdi Ezechi, a lawmaker representing Ndokwa East/Ndokwa West/Ukwuani Federal Constituency in Delta State, the proposed legislation aims to amend Section 246 of the 1999 Constitution, which currently designates the Court of Appeal as the final arbiter for National and State Assembly election petitions—but not governorship elections.
If enacted, the bill would prevent gubernatorial election disputes from reaching the Supreme Court, a significant departure from current practice.
