A total of 634 civil matters have been successfully resolved by two strategic units of the Edo State Ministry of Justice. These disputes related to inheritance, matrimony, and employer/employee disagreements. The Citizens’ Mediation Center (CMC) and the Citizens Rights Department (CRD) handled these cases.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Edo State, Rt. Hon. Samson Osagie disclosed this in Benin City. Both platforms deliver Alternative Dispute Resolution services. They provide legal services for the underserved and strengthen citizens’ fundamental human rights.
He urged Edo citizens and residents to access these services. The units have been part of the Ministry of Justice since 2018. They offer free mediation to indigent and vulnerable citizens who struggle with the formal justice system.
Mr. Osagie emphasized that the CRD has reduced court backlogs. The department operates through two specialized units. These are the General Complaint Unit and the Correctional Centre Legal Services.
The CRD unit has successfully intervened in 393 cases over the years. These include landlord-tenant disputes, domestic violence, and human rights violations.
“The Citizen’s Mediation Center and the Citizens Rights Department have played indispensable roles in promoting peace, justice and social harmony in Edo State,” he stated.
The Commissioner noted that justice isn’t only for the privileged few. It is a right accessible to all. He urged citizens to use these strategic departments.
