Targets 100% water production by end of 2025
The Kaduna State has announced a massive investment of over N3.5 billion to overhaul and rejuvenate the state’s water supply system.
The funds are being channeled into various critical areas, including staff welfare, infrastructure upgrades, and operational costs, to ensure the availability of portable drinking water for residents of Kaduna City and surrounding communities.
Governor Uba Sani revealed the details during an inspection of the Kaduna State Water Treatment Plant in Kakuri, Kaduna State, on Friday.

The plant, like many others in the state, had suffered years of neglect, leading to a drastic decline in water production, which had fallen to a mere 5% before the current administration took office.
“Our administration has embarked on a total overhaul of the water supply system in Kaduna State,” Governor Sani stated. “We have mobilised contractors to 12 water treatment plants across the state and are committed to ensuring that the Kaduna State Water Corporation (KADSWAC) lives up to its obligations.”

The breakdown of the N3.5 billion expenditure includes N800 million to settle outstanding salaries and wages of KADSWAC staff, with employees reinstated on the state payroll until 2027, when the corporation is expected to stabilise and operate as a commercial entity.
Additionally, N1.3 billion has been allocated to clear outstanding electricity bills, ensuring uninterrupted power supply to water treatment plants, while N400 million has been spent on the purchase of water purification chemicals. Over N1 billion has also been invested in replacing vandalized and nonfunctional water pipelines.
Governor Sani also highlighted the progress made in water production, which has increased from 5% to over 25% in the last 20 months.
He expressed confidence that the state would achieve a 100% water production rate by the end of the fourth quarter of 2025.
The Kaduna State Government’s investment extends beyond urban areas, with a focus on providing clean, portable water to rural communities as well. The rehabilitation and retrofitting of water treatment plants and distribution mains are being carried out with an emphasis on sanitation and hygiene, aligning with the administration’s goal of ensuring access to clean water for every household.
“Our aim is to provide portable clean water to every home, not just in the urban areas but in our rural communities as well,” Governor Sani said. “This is a critical step toward improving the quality of life for all residents of Kaduna State.”
