In a significant development aimed at enhancing access to education financing, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), and Data Mining Company have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce biometric-enabled cards for students. This initiative is designed to streamline the disbursement and management of education loans, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
The agreement was formalized over the weekend at the NELFUND headquarters in Abuja. The signatories included Engineer Abisoye Coker-Odusote, Director-General of NIMC; Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director and CEO of NELFUND; and Mr. Femi Akande, Managing Director of Data Mining Company.
Mr. Sawyerr hailed the MoU as a transformative step toward advancing financial inclusion and fostering transparency and accountability in the implementation of the Government-to-People Service Card (G2PS-card). He emphasized that the partnership would create new opportunities for Nigerian students to access loans through multi-functional, biometric-enabled cards issued by NIMC.
The NELFUND chief also praised President Bola Tinubu for initiating socio-economic programs aimed at improving the prospects of Nigerian students. He expressed confidence that the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda would have a profound and lasting impact on the educational landscape of the country.
Engineer Coker-Odusote highlighted the role of the biometric-enabled cards in driving digital and financial inclusion, ensuring that every beneficiary of government services possesses a verifiable identity. She explained that the cards feature multiple wallets, enabling students to access loans and other services both online and offline.
According to her, the innovative cards will not only facilitate the tracking of loan disbursements but also ensure that funds are utilized for their intended purposes. She added that the cards would enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency while reducing bureaucratic hurdles.
“The biometric-enabled card is a groundbreaking tool for promoting digital and financial inclusion, thanks to its advanced security features. It is virtually impossible to forge or replicate,” she stated. “These cards provide students with immediate access to funds in their wallets, allowing them to receive allowances, purchase books, and conduct transactions seamlessly without relying on traditional banking systems. Importantly, the cards are designed to function both online and offline, ensuring accessibility in all circumstances.”
