EBS Calls Out Government Appointees For Shunning Media
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS) has issued a stern statement criticising certain government appointees for their refusal to engage with journalists, particularly those from EBS, during the first 100 days of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration.

The media house, which operates under the mandate of the state government, has expressed deep concern over the lack of transparency and communication, which it said undermines the public’s right to information.

In a press release today, the management of EBS highlighted the vital role of the media as the fourth estate of the realm, emphasising its duty to hold leaders accountable and ensure the public is well-informed about government policies and programmes.

The statement read, “Clear communication regarding government policies and programmes is essential; the public deserves to hear directly from their leaders and access the information that impacts their lives.”

EBS revealed that its journalists have faced repeated challenges in securing interviews or responses from key government officials, despite numerous attempts.

The broadcaster has now instructed its team to meticulously document all efforts to communicate with these officials, including instances where they have declined to engage.

“We cannot continue to portray a facade of unreachability when an official has deliberately opted not to engage with us,” the statement added.

The broadcaster also praised Governor Okpebholo for his hands-on approach to governance, noting his active involvement in inspecting projects across the state and his commitment to public service. However, it expressed bewilderment that some appointees under his administration are not aligning with his vision of transparency and accountability.

“It is perplexing that some appointed officials would choose not to support a government that prioritises transparency and serves the public interest by providing vital information,” the statement continued. EBS called for improved collaboration between government officials and the media, stressing that such cooperation is crucial for keeping the citizens of Edo State informed and engaged.

The statement concluded with a hopeful note, expressing confidence that the current situation could be resolved. “We firmly believe that the current situation can be improved, and we look forward to fostering a more collaborative relationship with both appointees and elected officials. Together, we can ensure that the citizens of Edo State receive the clarity and information they rightfully deserve.”
