The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has strongly criticized former Kaduna State governor Nasir el-Rufai’s recent appeal for a political alliance between the North and the South-South regions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued by the group’s President, Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, the NDYC dismissed el-Rufai’s proposal as a self-serving strategy, motivated more by personal ambition than by a sincere commitment to national unity.
The NDYC accused el-Rufai of having a political track record tainted by deceit, betrayal, and a lack of accountability. The group alleged that he played a significant role in the political attacks against former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, undermining his administration’s efforts in economic reform, infrastructure development, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
Furthermore, the NDYC pointed to el-Rufai’s tenure as governor of Kaduna State, which they claim was characterized by alleged financial mismanagement and the accumulation of massive debt. They referenced the ongoing investigation by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which they say has revealed widespread corruption and fiscal irresponsibility during his leadership.
The NDYC firmly rejected el-Rufai’s call for a political realignment, labeling it a desperate ploy to evade accountability. The group urged him to address the allegations surrounding his governance in Kaduna State before attempting to advise Nigerians on matters of governance and national renewal.
“We, the Niger Delta Youth Congress, advise Nasir el-Rufai to cease his pursuit of political redemption and instead focus on addressing the controversies surrounding his tenure in Kaduna State. He must clear his name before presuming to lecture Nigerians on governance and national salvation,” the statement read.
The NDYC also called on the people of the South-South region and all conscientious Nigerians to remain alert and resist any attempts by discredited politicians to regain power under the guise of national interest.
“Our region will not be exploited as a pawn in the self-serving schemes of individuals who have contributed to the nation’s decline, only to now claim they seek its revival,” the NDYC declared.
The group emphasized the need for vigilance and unity in rejecting what they perceive as manipulative tactics by politicians seeking to return to power under false pretenses.
